Andover was a village of 166 people when it incorporated in 1957. It is now the largest city in Butler County at nearly 15,000, and it carries a storm history unlike anywhere else in the metro. On 26 April 1991 an F5 tornado killed 17 people here with winds estimated at 261 mph; survey crews photographed trees stripped completely of their bark. On 29 April 2022 an EF3 with 155 mph winds cut a 12.75-mile path through town and damaged more than a thousand buildings.

That history changes how people here think about the tree in the front yard, and rightly so. Structural pruning that reduces what a high wind can catch is worth more in Andover than almost anywhere. Overhanging growth is handled under health nuisances: it becomes a violation if branches hang below 10 feet over a sidewalk or 14 feet over a street, and the city can abate it and charge you.

What the 2022 tornado actually did. The National Weather Service survey put it at 155 mph peak winds, a 12.75-mile path and a maximum width of 440 yards, on the ground from 8:10 to 8:31 pm on 29 April 2022. Three injuries, no deaths, and over a thousand buildings damaged — including the YMCA and Prairie Creek Elementary, both since rebuilt.

Why structural pruning matters more here. A tree that has already survived one violent wind event often carries hidden cracks. If a tree on your property came through 2022, it's worth having someone look at the unions and the deadwood rather than assuming it's fine.
