Maize has roughly quadrupled since 2000, going from about 1,868 residents to over 7,000 on the city's own 2025 figures. That growth means something specific for trees: the overwhelming majority of them are young. Young trees don't usually need removing — they need training, so they grow one strong central trunk instead of a weak fork that splits in a Kansas wind twenty years from now.

Maize takes its trees seriously enough to have a Park and Tree Board, a tree ordinance that bans topping outright, and a rule that any arborist working in the city files proof of $500,000 in liability coverage. What Baker does in Maize

Maize tree rules worth knowing

Topping is unlawful in Maize. Ordinance 13-307 makes topping a street tree unlawful as a normal practice, with exceptions only for storm damage and utility conflicts. It's a good rule — topping ruins a tree's structure and shortens its life.

Your arborist has to be insured, and the city sets the number. Section 13-312 requires anyone doing tree work in Maize to file evidence of $500,000 bodily injury and $500,000 property damage liability coverage. Baker carries full insurance.

The city can act on a dead tree on private property. Sections 13-309 and 13-310 let the city require removal of dead or diseased trees that are hazardous or harbour pests, with notice and charges to the owner.

Clearance and hedge limits. Branches over the public right-of-way and sidewalks must be kept no lower than 12 feet, and hedges are limited to 3 feet.

June 2026 showed what wind does here. In the overnight windstorm of 21 June 2026, Maize recorded estimated 65–70 mph gusts that snapped large, healthy limbs 6 to 12 inches in diameter and put debris across roads. Healthy wood breaks too when the gust is strong enough.
