W.W. Hays platted Haysville in 1891 and it was long known as the Peach Capital of Kansas — a heritage you can still read in the park names: Old Oak, Orchard Acres, Pear Tree. It's also the town in this metro with the hardest storm record. On 3 May 1999 a tornado tracked 24 miles and hit Haysville at F4 strength, killing six people, damaging 150 homes and 27 businesses, and destroying the historic district so completely that only the old bank vault was left standing on the east side of Main Street.

Haysville tree rules worth knowing

Dead or diseased trees: you get 60 days. Section 13-308 says the city shall remove dead or diseased trees and limbs within the city. Owners get written notice and 60 days to deal with it, after which the city does the work and bills it to the property taxes. That's a longer window than most neighbouring cities give.

Clearances are the abutting owner's job. Section 13-307 requires 8 feet over walkways and 14 feet over streets, and states plainly that maintaining those clearances is the responsibility of the abutting property owner — with 30 days to comply once notified.

No permit for your own tree. Article 13 contains no permit requirement for removing a tree on private property.

Tree City USA for 25 straight years. The Park Board doubles as Haysville's tree board and is responsible for trees on city property to Tree City USA standards.

The storm record, accurately. The 3 May 1999 tornado is the one that defines Haysville — F4 damage, six killed, the historic district destroyed. The more famous 1991 Andover tornado did pass through Haysville earlier that evening, but at F2 to F3 intensity; it reached F5 later, at Andover. A 2012 EF3 also caused significant damage here.
