Derby's oldest trees are hitting seventy — here's what that means

Derby grew up around aviation. It had 432 residents in 1950, and within six years Boeing and McConnell had pushed it past five thousand. Census figures show more than 1,600 Derby homes were built in that 1950s decade alone, and the trees planted with them are now large, mature and reaching the end of their structural life. That's the single biggest driver of tree work in the city today.

At the same time nearly one in five Derby homes has gone up since 2010, so the work splits cleanly: mature removals and heavy trimming on the established east side, structural pruning on young trees in the newer additions. Derby tree rules worth knowing

Your tree crew must be licensed by the City of Derby. This is unusual and worth checking. Derby's code (§12.28.110) makes it unlawful for anyone to plant, prune, treat or remove any tree — on public or private property — as a business without a city licence and $500,000 of liability coverage. Ask whoever quotes your job whether they hold one.

No permit needed for your own tree, but topping is banned. You don't need a removal permit for a tree on your own residential property. Derby does prohibit topping on street, park and public trees, and after any removal the stump has to come out below ground level.

Clearances are your responsibility. The city puts the duty on the abutting owner: 8 feet above walkways, 12 feet above the street — for trees on your property and the street trees in front of it.

Hail is Derby's signature damage. The national storm record for Derby is dominated by hail and straight-line wind rather than tornadoes — 2.75-inch hail in both 1997 and 2004, and a 90 mph wind event in 2000. Hail shreds foliage and breaks small wood; wind finds the weak forks.

Watch for emerald ash borer. Derby's own tree guide warns that the borer has killed millions of ash across the Midwest and will likely reach Sedgwick County. If you have an ash, get it looked at.
